Gentle Ways to Protect Your Baby from Mosquitoes and Insect Bites in Summer

Those sweet summer evenings on the balcony or in the park can sometimes be interrupted by a tiny buzz. Mosquito and insect bites can irritate your baby's delicate skin, but there's no need to worry. With a few gentle measures you can keep your little one cool, comfortable, and protected.

Why do insects bother babies more in summer?

A baby's skin is thinner and more sensitive than an adult's, so a bite can cause more noticeable redness or itching. Babies also can't protect their hands yet, so they may scratch and irritate the skin. Mosquitoes multiply in hot, humid weather, which increases exposure.

The basic principles of gentle protection

The safest approach is to put physical barriers first before reaching for any chemical. Dressing your baby in light but covering clothes and limiting time outdoors during peak hours is often enough. When it comes to repellent products, age matters a great deal; it is best to consult your pediatrician before using any product for your baby.

1

Cover the skin gently

Choose light-colored, lightweight, breathable long-sleeved cotton clothing. Thin fabric keeps your baby cool while covering the skin directly and reducing bites.

2

Protect the living space

Place a tightly woven net over the crib, stroller, and play area. Fit screens on the windows and empty containers of standing water; these small steps keep insects away.

3

Adjust the timing

Shorten time spent outdoors at sunset and early morning, when mosquitoes are most active. Planning walks for midday or shaded, breezy spots provides both coolness and protection.

The Maiyko difference: On hot summer days, a fabric that covers the skin without overheating it matters. The light, long-sleeved bodysuits and pajamas we make from GOTS-certified organic cotton gently cover your baby's skin while letting it breathe — a natural physical barrier.

How to soothe a bite if it happens

First, stay calm; most bites clear up on their own within a few days. You can gently clean the area with lukewarm water and hold a clean, cool cloth on it for a few minutes to ease the itching. Keeping your baby's nails short prevents irritation from scratching. If the swelling grows quickly, spreads over a large area, is accompanied by fever, or your baby is very unsettled, contact your pediatrician without delay.

❓ Can I use insect repellent spray on babies?

Whether it is age-appropriate depends on the product, and your pediatrician is the best source on this. As a general rule, physical barriers (clothing, nets) come first for very young babies; always consult your doctor before applying any repellent.
