Cool, Safe Sleep for Your Baby on Hot Summer Nights
When summer evenings refuse to cool down, a restless, frequently waking baby can leave you tired too. It's a very natural worry; small bodies regulate heat differently from adults. The good news: with a few gentle adjustments, you can make night sleep both cooler and safer.
Why do babies sleep less easily in the heat?
Because a baby's temperature-regulation system is still maturing, they are affected by warm rooms more quickly. Fluid loss through sweat, sticky-feeling skin and over-dressing can all lead to night waking. Our aim is to gently prevent overheating without letting your baby get cold — in other words, to find the balance.
Steps for a cool, safe night
1. Cool the room calmly
Close the curtains early in the evening and air the room. If you use air conditioning or a fan, don't aim the airflow straight at your baby; an indirect, gentle breeze is enough.
2. Choose light, breathable fabrics
On warm nights a single layer of light, breathable cotton is often enough. You can check your baby's temperature by gently touching the back of the neck or the back; hands and feet are normally a little cooler.
3. Keep the bed simple and safe
In the heat, prefer a thin sleep sack or a light cover over a thick duvet. Keeping pillows, toys and loose blankets out of the bed supports both coolness and safe sleep.
4. Support hydration
For babies under 6 months, breast milk or formula meets their needs; feeds may become a little more frequent in the heat. For older babies, offering water during the day can help, in line with your doctor's advice.
Questions parents often ask
❓ How do I know if my baby is too warm?
A sweaty neck, damp hair, flushed cheeks and fast breathing can be clues. If the neck or back feels hot and damp, you can try removing one layer. If worrying signs continue, talk to your doctor.
❓ Is a fan safe?
As long as you point the air at the room rather than directly at your baby, a gentle breeze is usually soothing. Make sure cords and the device are out of your baby's reach.
The Maiyko difference: On hot summer nights, it really matters that the fabric touching your baby's skin can breathe. That's why we use GOTS-certified organic cotton; soft, finely woven and gentle on sensitive skin, it helps create a cooler feeling of sleep without trapping heat.
