Book Ideas for 0-12 Months: Your Baby's First Reading Journey
The moment you pick up a book and show it to your baby for the first time may come sooner than you think. They may not speak yet, perhaps not even focus on the pages; but the tone of your voice, the colours of the pages, and that warmth in your arms are already planting the seeds of first reading memories. Choosing books for the first year is not complicated — you simply need to find what suits the stage your baby is in.
Which Book for Which Stage?
In the newborn period your baby's vision is still developing, so books with clear lines and high contrast (black-and-white or a bright single colour) catch their interest. From the third month, cloth books they can hold and pat, rustly pages and different textures nourish their sense of discovery. After six months, thick board books come into play: little hands love turning pages, and short rhymes with simple single-object pictures suit this age well. Move along without rushing, following your baby's own pace.
Keep it short
Your baby's interest may fade after a few pages; you don't have to finish the book. Stop or continue based on the cues they give you.
Use your voice
Your intonation, repeated sounds and a sing-song reading gather your baby's attention. Reading the same book again and again is reassuring too.
Let them touch
Turning the pages, patting the cloth, even bringing it to the mouth is a natural part of reading at this age; give them room to explore.
❓ My baby doesn't listen to the book and bites it. Is that normal?
Yes, completely normal. At this age a book is explored like a toy; mouthing, turning and dropping it are a natural way of learning. Listening time gradually lengthens on its own, without you forcing it.
The Maiyko difference: Cloth books, when chosen from soft and safe materials like the GOTS-certified organic cotton that touches your baby's skin, become the most peaceful reading companions to explore.
