Baby-Led Weaning (BLW): A Gentle Guide to Getting Started

As solid foods approach, many mums wonder: spoon-fed purées, or letting baby feed themselves? Feeling unsure is natural. Baby-led weaning (BLW) is a gentle approach that lets your little one explore food at their own pace — and with the right preparation it can grow into a calm mealtime routine.

What is BLW, and how is it different from purées?

Instead of spoon-feeding purées, baby-led weaning means offering soft foods cut to a size your baby can hold, letting them decide how much to eat. Your little one discovers texture, smell and taste at their own pace, which may support chewing skills and hand-eye coordination.

When is your baby ready?

Age alone isn't the whole picture; readiness signs are weighed together. From around six months, your baby may be ready if they can sit upright with support, hold their head steady, reach for food with interest, and the tongue-thrust reflex has faded.

1A safe mealtime setup

It's important that your baby sits fully upright in a highchair; eating in a reclined position isn't recommended. An adult staying at the table throughout the meal is the foundation of safety.

2Suitable first foods

Steamed-soft carrot, courgette or broccoli sticks, ripe avocado and banana slices make a lovely start. Pieces the size of an adult finger are easy to grasp; soft enough to squash with a fork is a good benchmark.

3Give exploration room

In the first weeks much of the food may end up on the floor — a natural part of learning. Sitting and eating together sets the best example. Small amounts are fine; the goal is discovering more than filling up.

Gagging and choking are not the same

Gagging is a natural protective reflex: it's noisy, your baby coughs, may turn red and pushes food forward. Seen occasionally at first, it shows the reflex is working. Choking is different: it's silent, the baby cannot make sounds, may turn pale or bluish, and needs immediate help. Knowing the difference helps you stay calm at the table.

Some shapes are risky at any age: round foods like whole grapes, cherry tomatoes and olives are cut lengthwise into quarters; whole nuts are never offered, only nut butters spread in a thin layer. Hard raw apple and carrot are softened by cooking. Learning basic infant first aid also brings many parents real peace of mind.

❓ Can purées and BLW work together?

Yes — a combined approach is very common. You can offer spoon-fed purées at some meals and finger foods at others. The key is following your baby's rhythm with the spoon and watching appetite cues without pressure.
