5 Tips for Your Baby’s First Solid Food Experience
Your baby has started exploring, touching, and—of course—putting everything in their mouth. The first solid food adventure can be as exciting as it is full of questions. Here are 5 concrete tips to guide you on this journey.
1. Get the timing right
If your baby can sit with support, has good head control, and the tongue-thrust reflex is fading, they’re ready. Trying first bites in the morning, when they’re most energetic, often works best.
2. Introduce one food at a time
Offering each new food alone makes it easier to spot any allergic reactions. Seasonal fruits like strawberries and plums are great picks. Serve them as a puree to suit your baby’s palate.
Which foods should I start with?
Vegetables like zucchini, sweet potato, and carrot; fruits like apple, pear, and banana; and porridge made with rice flour are popular first choices. Always consult your pediatrician as you go.
3. Texture and temperature matter
First solids should be a smooth, runny puree to make swallowing easy. Temperature-wise, aim for lukewarm—not hot, not cold. Watch your baby’s cues; if they struggle, thin the texture a bit more.

4. Be patient and consistent
Your baby might reject a food on the first try. That’s normal! Offering the same food again on different days helps them recognize and get used to it. Don’t force it—make it playful. For example, saying “here comes the airplane” with funny sounds can work wonders.
My baby isn’t eating—should I worry?
Appetite fluctuations are common in babies. Growth spurts, teething, or illness can reduce appetite. If weight gain stops or food refusal is constant, check with your pediatrician.
5. Create a safe environment
Sit your baby upright in a high chair. Stay with them during meals and watch for choking hazards. Always offer pieces that are safe for your baby—about the size of a chickpea.
